Personalization is a great way to impart a unique touch
to your wedding invitation. Don’t be afraid to jump
in and try something new and it’s a great way to save
money.
The invitations can all be identical or they can be hand-tailored
for each recipient, depending upon the amount of time and
the number of guests you expect. If you’re not confident
of your design capabilities, try making a sample invitation
to see how it looks.
Here’s a suggestion: get some textured specialty
paper and some construction paper in a complementary color.
If your wedding has theme colors, try using them. Other
ideas include darker and lighter shades of the same pastel or any two of your favorite color combinations.
You will also need some paper twine, which comes in various
neutral colors and an accent piece of some sort. Sequins,
inexpensive pieces of costume jewelry, wedding novelty items
(usually available at party stores) or anything else that
holds personal meaning or fits in with the theme of the
wedding will work. Use a paper punch or scissors to make
a hole in your accent piece large enough for the twine.
Then you’re ready to assemble the invitation. Divide
your construction paper or any other type of colored paper,
into four sections. Cut the textured specialty paper so
that it is slightly larger than the construction paper and
creates a border when the two are glued together.
Use your computer to create the wording for the invitation;
select a special font and make sure the wording is nicely
spaced and does not appear crowded. You can hand-write the
invitation by purchasing stencils at an art supply store
and use them to create the wording. Perhaps one of your
friends is great at calligraphy!
Once the wording is in place and the glue has dried, make
a hole in the invitation large enough for the twine to fit
through. Place your accent piece on the top of the invitation
and thread the twine through the accent piece and the invitation
itself, then glue the twine in place or tie it tightly.
Try threading from behind and using the twine to create
a festive bow. It’s up to you.
Once you’ve made an invitation and are satisfied
with the result, it’s easy to streamline production
of the rest of the invitations by pre-cutting the paper,
punching all holes ahead of time and assembling each invitation
in the same order. You’ll be proud of the results and your invitation will be as unique as your special day.
